Arab Pastry in Germany

Hasam lived in Syria and had a happy life. Until the war began. Because of the war, he and his family had to leave the country. Hasam was a soldier and used to fight. His own point of view was completely different to the people who caused the war. So he became a deserter and had to flee his country.

Since September 2015 he lives in Germany, in a small village in the south, called Eutingen. There he has no home, no work and no daily grind. He was a refugee with no property. In Syria, Hasam was a baker and he loved to bake sweet Arabic pastry. After a few months in Germany the commodity team asylum came to the refugee camp and asked the residents which job they used to do in their homeland. So he came with an interpreter in the German bakery Plaz. There, he introduced himself and showed a lot of initiative. So the bakery decided to invite him for a one-day work trial.

On his trial he baked delicious Arabic delicacies. The German bakery and also their clients were amazed by his work. So the bakery decided to hire him. But it isn’t easy for a refugee to get hired. Before you are allowed to start working, the vacancy has to be offered to the German citizens. When the company couldn’t find a good applicant for the offered job, they are allowed to offer the job to a refugee. Right now Hasam is still waiting to start. It is very important for him to learn the German language. But the chef of the bakery is very confident that he will do that immediately when he has started the job. But Hasam also has other goals than just learning the new language. He wants to learn how to bake real German brezels.
